Verb Tenses

When you want to tell someone WHEN an action, an emotion, or a state of being occurred, one of the first things to watch is the verb tense.  Verbs appear in the past, present and future forms.  Students in UNLV composition classes should refer to the Prentice Hall Reference Guide to Grammar and Usage (Fifth Edition), Chapter 17, Section C (pages 91-98).

Simple Forms

  • Present:  This tense usually indicates a current condition or action, though it can also include actions that happen often.

Examples:        The new homeowners are happy.
The dog barks at his own shadow.

  • Past:  This tense suggest that an action or a condition has been completed.

Examples:        I wrote a memo yesterday.
The cat was nervous during the thunderstorm.

  • Future:  This tense shows that a condition or action will occur later, in the future.

Examples:        My husband will be happy with his birthday present.
The Writing Center will open on September 3.

Compound Forms

  • Progressive Tenses:  This tense marks action that can't be described as happening at only a particular moment.  It is formed by using a form of the verb to be and adding the present participle form (verb + -ing) of another verb.

Present Progressive:  This tense is useful for showing that an action is happening right now or that an action is ongoing.  Using present progressive allows a writer to emphasize the "now-ness" or immediacy of the action.

Example:    I am looking at this website now.

Past Progressive:  This tense shows that an action occurred over some time.  This tense is used most often when a writer wants to show that something was happening already when another action occurred.

Example:    John was eating his lunch when the phone rang.

Future Progressive:  Not surprisingly, this tense indicates that an action will happen in the future but will be going on for awhile.

Example:    Vicki will be expecting a good grade this semester.

  • Perfect Tenses:  This tense also lets a writer show that action can't be pinpointed to just one time.  These tenses are formed by using a form of the verb to have with the past participle form (verb + -ed) of another verb.

Present Perfect:  This tense indicates that an action or condition started at one point in time and has continued to the present.  The action or condition may or may not continue into the future.

Example:  Jay Tee has played the piano for five years.

  • This tense can also show that an action happened in the past but that it is not important or not necessary to know exactly when it happened.  No time reference is made.  Example:  I have done my homework.
  • This tense can show, too, that an action happened recently.  In this case the word JUST is added to the sentence.  Example:  I have just finished my homework.
  • Lastly, this tense can show that an action happened more than once.  It is not important or not necessary in this case to know when it happened.  Example:  Jennifer has seen that old movie seven times!

Past Perfect:  This tense, as you might expect, shows that an action started in the past and continued up to a later point in the past -- but stopped at that point in time.

Example:  My uncle had worked at the power plant for ten years before he retired.

Future Perfect:  This tense indicates that an action or condition will continue up to a certain point in the future -- think of this tense as one that allows a writer to project into the future.

Example:  I will have watched thousands of hours of television by the time I reach my sixtieth birthday.

Though not as common as the others, another verb tense which you may encounter is Perfect Progressive, a compound tense consisting of a form of the verb to have + been + present participle of another verb.  This tense also comes in past, present, and future forms.  Here's a quick summary:

  • Present Perfect Progressive:  With this tense, a writer can show that an action not only started in the past and continues in the present but also may keep going into the future.  Example:  I have been working on my magazine article.
  • Past Perfect Progressive:  This tense shows an action that was ongoing in the past but is now complete.  Example:  I had been working on my magazine article, but I just finished it.
  • Future Perfect Progressive:  Using this tense, a writer can show that a condition or an action has been ongoing and will continue until a specific time point in the future.  Example:  I will have been writing this article for a year by the time June arrives!
